TV Free

I have been TV free for eight months now.

You can't believe all the things I can accomplish since I turned off the tube. And then there is the quiet and stillness that I'm learning to love - I can actually hear myself think again. With each new season, it seemed to me that TV had just become too violent. I also notice that I'm more content with the things I have, now that I've filtered out all of those advertisers who constantly were barraging me to buy their stuff. It wasn't an easy choice, but I'm glad I did it and it's getting easier every day.

TV Free for 5 Years

We went TV free after moving to a new house five years ago. I would not go back! After a couple of months of no commercials, no TV show previews, no movie previews, we have noticed that our impulse buying has gone down and we don't know anything about the new shows and movies so we are not spending time and money there either. We rely on friends to tell us about a good movie they saw, we write it down and then we either rent from the library or wait until they are on the $1-2 rack at the video store. Most of the shows on TV are not worth watching because the content and the commercials have gotten so bad, that we don't miss that either. We spend more time as a family (playing games, going to the park, working on a project, etc.) than before. We get our news from internet sites we like and the radio. We have a couple of people that call us to notify us of storm alerts that we then monitor on the radio. Our kids do not nag us for stuff because they don't watch commercials (they do get TV at the grandparents, but it's limited). Our kids also know how to play and entertain themselves.

We do have one TV in the basement that does not get reception, so it is only used for movies. We get children's TV shows and movies from the library, but have recently decided to either purchase a few or download from NetFlix, as way too many of the library kids stuff was damaged.

We canceled our local TV cable subscription and are not only saving $66 per month (we had a bundle package-TV cable, phone and internet) we are enjoying actually TALKING to one another!  Without cable we get no outside TV media.  We get our news, etc from the newspaper and online. We do use NetFlix for $15/month but it is without all of the screaming commercials and we can control what comes into our home.

I thought it would be hard, but it was not.  I found all kinds of free time and am going to bed earlier and feeling rested.

I'm with you!  Being without the TV has made such a change.  It's peaceful.  It's added peace to the home.  I can get a lot of stuff done!  Try it!

Mom and I recently moved to a new apartmet we never had cable but when they changed regular tv to converted boxes I only bought 1 that cost me $80 at the time I had no idea what saving money was. Now I cant find the converter box and I only get reception from a Korean Ch its great i love it it has english and spanish subtittles and it has inspired me to lear korean as well. I have NetFlix on my laptop but its because my boyfrend has it and he added it on my laptop. whitch is great because i dont have to pay for it. And now I enjoy reading books and taking time to meditate and I have more comunication with my mom and my love.
