Instant "Apple Pie"

grilled applesauce sandwich

Cheap snack for kids!  Take sandwich bread and top with applesauce and cinnamon.  Make a sandwich and butter both sides.  Cook like a grilled cheese sandwich. Sprinkle with sugar and you have an instant apple pie.  The kids love it!

Veggies in the Bag

veggies in the bag

At the end of dinner time if you have a spoonful of left over corn, beans, peas etc add them to a freezer bag.  When you have enough make some vegetable soup.

Playing Cards in the Kitchen

meal planning cards

I write down my entrees, sides, desserts, etc. on a separate 3 x 5 card. When it comes time to plan a meal based on what I have in my pantry and/or what's on sale, I can take an entree card, choose a side card, and choose a dessert card, too. That way I can mix and match my selections without having the same things over and over again. Then I put those meals on my menu planner (in my computer) and print it out.  I put that on the refrigerator so that my husband can see what I've got planned.

No More Bisquick!

pancakes from scratch

I never buy baking mixes. Just Google recipes for bisquits or pancakes and you will see that it's just flour & leavening (baking powder or soda) and water or milk... maybe a pinch of salt. For pancakes you need an egg, otherwise that's it. You'll save a ton of cash learning to bake for yourself.

Leftover Soup

I have a large family: a husband and our 8 kids.  At the end of the week I use the accumulated leftovers  and make a wonderful soup. I usually have everything I need in the cupboard (canned tomatoes or tomato paste, beans of any kind, noodles of any kind, frozen chicken broth I save after stewing chickens or leftover beef broth I save after doing a roast); and then I toss in almost all leftovers.

Veggies for Soups or Stews

I keep a plastic container in my freezer and after a meal if there is a small amount of veggies left I place them in the container. When I make a soup or stew I just dump the container contents in my pot and have a great variety of veggies.

Smarter Salad Keeper

Smarter Salad Keeper

When you make salad, store it in a glass bowl or 9 x 13 pan.  The cold glass keeps your salad crisp and lasts 3 times longer.  Cover tightly.
