  • Being smarter with your grocery dollars is one of the fastest ways to fire-up your family's financial recovery. Here are four ways to begin saving on groceries starting today.

  • after christmas sale

I shop the after christmas sales to stock up on gifts to give throughout the
year. Many toys, sweaters, slippers, and jewelry go on sale at reduced prices of
75% to 90% off. Four years ago I bought five $15 cosmetics cases for $3 each and I just gave away my last three this Christmas! What a great deal!!!!

  • Get Used Womens Magazines at the Library

I love reading women's magazines. I find it relaxing to sit and read them while I wait to pick the kids up at school, or while they play at the park.

Unfortunately magazine individual copies can be expensive, from $1.99 - $4.99 each.

Well, our local library has a "used" book section that sells magazines for 5 cents each. I found three, current month, magazines, in like new condition, and paid only 15 cents total. These would have cost about $12 new. Then I make it even better by donating them to the local clinic for their waiting room.

  • coupons

Instead of wasting more money  joining sites like The Grocery Game find free ones suchs as:

  • YORKIE bed pillow

I had a twin sized pillow that got old and ripped on the side. Instead of tossing it I washed it, patched it up with some needle and thread, put it inside of an old flanel pillow case and reused it as a doggie bed from my Yorkie. She thought it was a brand new bed! She really likes it when I put the pillow in my laundry basket. She'll hop in and stay warm all winter.

  • great toys at thrift stores

Don't overlook garage sales and thrift stores for great kids gifts.

  • Camera Price Tags

I recently went to the supermarket armed with my paper and pen to record the prices and units of all the items I use when my cell phone rang. That's when I remembered I had a camera on my cell phone.

I went around taking a picture of all of the labels of the items I use and when I got home I was able to make a list at my leisure. It was a lot easier and less time consuming then  hand writing them all in the supermarket.

    It was fast and easy!

  • spreadable butter

I purchased a container of spreadable butter and saved the container when it was empty.

Then I purchased some real butter and mixed it in my blender with milk—this stretches it and makes it spreadable, just like the manufactured kind, only this is real butter!

I'm so glad my grandmother taught me this trick!

    OPTION 2:

Another option is to use canola oil to stretch the butter:

  • Dilute Dish Soap

When I get low on laundry detergent, I add a little bit of water, shake and use this when I wash clothes that aren't real dirty.

I also use this same strategy with dish soap.

Another idea is when emptying a bottle of bbq sauce, add water and use this when cooking, for example in baked bbq pork chops.

  • alterations - thrift store clothes

If you have some skill with a sewing machine, this is a fun way to have the clothes you want at very little cost. I like to get larger sized clothing from thrift shops and 'repurpose' them.

  • Dryer Sheet alternative

A small bottle of fabric softner last me for about 8 months.  Take an old sock or wash cloth and add 1teaspoon of fabric softner.

  • pill splitter

To save on prescriptions, have your doctor write the prescription for double the dosage and then split the pill in half with a Pill Splitter.  For example, my husband takes Lipitor 40 mg.

  • finger painted wrapping paper

Saw your tips on the Today Show for gift wrap. I have a similar idea.

When my boys were young (now 19 and 16) they loved to paint pictures so I bought them the paper from office supply stores that comes in easel pads and when they were done with the pictures we used it for wrapping paper. They loved telling everyone that they had made the paper.

  • Every time you put away your groceries, put the price you paid on the bottom of the product. That way you will always know the price you paid and I try to always beat that price.  It's keeps me focused and I never forget prices.

  • grilled applesauce sandwich

Cheap snack for kids!  Take sandwich bread and top with applesauce and cinnamon.  Make a sandwich and butter both sides.  Cook like a grilled cheese sandwich. Sprinkle with sugar and you have an instant apple pie.  The kids love it!
