    Just Married

Stephen and I are in our first year of marriage — married in March 2007— and we have faced the challenges so many young couples face when trying to get their finances in sync with a new lifestyle. With God’s grace, we are now using your budget sheets and the money is actually staying IN our account. We read your book TOGETHER on a trip from visiting family in Ohio to our new home in Virginia. We loved it! We laughed, we cried — it changed our lives. Thank You!

    family, matters, family, first

Here are some of the things we do to save money:

My husband commutes 10 miles to and from work on his bicycle, three days each week. I run and bike for my exercise. We don’t own a gym membership and it really helps with gas money and vehicle maintenance. We are considering joining a carpool for our kids’ school— although all three of my kids would rather ride their bikes to school everyday.

    sauted, cinnamon, apples

Annette came up with this simple recipe after a trip to a Cracker Barrel Restaurant on a recent vacation. Their baked apples are tender, sweet and juicy — mmmm mouth watering.

This is one of the recipes that Annette picked up from a friend during a group recipe swap the first year we were married. It's been a family favorite since 1982.

    Shop, smart

Learning to manage your grocery expenses is one of the fastest ways to start healing your family budget. Whether it’s due to being uneducated, too busy or just not caring, we see so many families practicing shopping habits that drive their food costs through the roof. Take this test and see if you are one of the violators:

Put a check mark next to any statement that describes something you’ve done in the past six months:

I have instituted the Money Smart Kids Payday system I ordered from you and am having great success with it! I have two teenagers and although they hemmed and hawed about it at first, they are really enjoying it now. They both have bank accounts now where they tuck away their savings each week (and enjoy watching the balance grow) and are holding onto their “give” earnings until they each find a charity that calls to them.

I just had to write and tell you how much I benefited from your book. The way you write is so down to earth that anyone can understand it — it’s just great! I feel like a friend is talking to me. You have given us a lot of help and encouragement.

Just wanted to express how thrilled I am that you were on 20/20 in January . Your segment seemed way too short, I KNOW that you have so much to offer everyone.

    Kitchen, Dance, organize, plan, efficency

Organizing your kitchen is much like choreographing a dance. All the elements must work in perfect accord to create a seemingly effortless, elegant and efficient performance.

If you have the wrong tools, or they’re in the wrong places, your kitchen dance will be stuttering and herky-jerky— not at all pleasant. It’s taken us years to get the right things in the right places.

What to do when you get the axe, fired

    Q. Linda Eagleson from San Jose, California wrote: Living in Silicon Valley, and having been through the tech downturn, I think an article on “Surviving Unemployment” would be helpful. Many employees never expect to be laid off. My nephew’s wife in Dallas recently walked into her office and was told that 90 percent of the employees were being terminated. She was in shock!

    Big House, Little House, downsize

We bought our first home in 1993. It was 1800 square feet and we paid it off in just seven years. Not bad — I thought. Both my husband and I were working and once we got serious, all of my paychecks went to paying off the house. But over time, things changed. We had two babies 18 months apart and we began to feel cramped, and then our area was re-districted into a less than desirable school district. So after ten years in our home, three without a mortgage, we bought “the big house” including a corner lot, with a pool in the back.

    discounted meat

Want to see people turn up their noses in disgust? Just mention that you often purchase meat that is going out of code. “Code” refers to the date placed by a grocer or manufacturer on a grocery item revealing its use-by, sell-by or freeze-by date.
