Cry now or cry later

furniture, home improvment, household expenses, debt, budget, attitudes

One afternoon in the early years of our marriage, Annette sat on one of our old, dilapidated, orange-and-brown plaid couches, which we purchased from missionaries for $25, and cried.

She cried because we were committed to living within our means and those means were pretty meager at that time — just $838 per month take-home pay.

Work and Play - In Perspective

Work and Play - In Perspective

The pendulum swings from one extreme to the other, from ceaseless work to endless play. Is either extreme right? According to statistics, Americans logged more work hours and are more productive than most other cultures. But the American family is disintegrating under the crush of heavy debt loads and high divorce rates. It appears that our priorities regarding work and play need evaluation.

Charitable Organizations to Consider

This list accompanies the article "Charitable Giving"

The list is available as an MSWord doc and .pdf

Mechanics Liens

Even if you pay your contractor in full, you stand the chance of having a lien put on your house — this nearly happened to us when we had a block fence installed. A mechanics lien can be put on your house if your contractor hires, but does not pay, a subcontractor. A lien of this type can hinder the sale of your home or cause you to have to sell your home to satisfy the lien holder.

Don't Get Nailed Hiring A Contractor

Old Truck

There are some jobs around the house that require expert know-how. We realize that some thrifty publications recommend that when it comes to home improvements or repairs, you should always “do it yourself.” We don’t. While we try to do most jobs ourselves, we recognize that there are limits to our abilities and there are limits to the time we can allot to specific jobs. Remember, being an economizer isn’t just about saving money — it’s about saving time and stress and preserving relationships.

Seasonal Decor Celebrating the Seasons Indoors

Seasonal Decor Celebrating the Seasons Indoors

The falling leaves drift past our windows. Like butterflies they flutter as they descend to their final resting place. Ah, the changing of seasons. It’s a refreshing transformation and revives our weary eyes. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to imitate nature inside our homes? No, we’re not talking about leaves in the living room or cactus needles in the kitchen. What we are suggesting is a celebration of seasonal colors and holidays with a variety of decorations throughout the entire year.

Sqeaky Clean?

Sqeaky Clean?

One of the most dreaded tasks known to man or woman is cleaning windows. Is there some magical method to overcome this frightful task? Some people advocate the blue window spray and newspaper. Others recommend a squeegee and water with a bit of dish soap. Does this task require a costly investment in tools and a multitude of specialized sprays, formulas and caustic concoctions to do it properly?

The Workshop — Save It, Fix It, Use It

One of the best ways to save money is repairing broken items rather than replacing them. Repairing broken toys or appliances will require some space, a few tools, time and often a bit of creativity. Step inside the HomeEconomiser workshop—just watch your step, it’s a bit cluttered, but everything has a purpose.
