Tough Times And The Honey Weapon

Frugality is finally in vogue. Saving money is the main topic of discussion at work, at school and in the media. So be bold, let people know that saving money is a fun game and that it produces great dividends; more security, more time with family and friends and less stress.

I Wish I May, I Wish I Might...

wish lists

We’ve always made lists: chore lists, errand lists, to-do lists, projects lists, possible baby-names lists, financial goals lists, Christmas lists — and the lists go on and on. But years ago, when we were “dirt poor,” we started doing something that has stuck with us to help avoid impulsive and costly purchases. It has also helped us to stay focused on what we really want and has given our kids and us great satisfaction. It’s something we call a wish list.

What do straight and curly cucumbers have to do with Christmas? Plenty! We’ve spent lots of time in the garden this year, and have been fascinated as we’ve watched it grow. Let us explain.

Pine Cones

pine cone basket

My mom grew up in a very rural setting during the depression. (She says everyone was poor to start with and the depression didn’t make that much of an impact!) She’s always been great at making do with what she has. Plus, she has always appreciated the beauty of nature. She loves to gather pine cones from different species of trees, keeping a variety stored. She saves the stubs and remains of old candles throughout the year. When Christmas approaches, she will melt the old candle wax, usually in an old slow cooker or on a hot plate on the porch, and dip the pine cones in.

Event Gifts

Here’s a Christmas idea that ended up saving us a lot of money. I decided in October that we would have an “event oriented” Christmas. I told all family members and friends who normally buy our children gifts that this year would be different. I didn’t want to continue accumulating “stuff.” We have six children and live in a small three-bedroom house. So you can imagine how I feel December 26th when I have no place to put all the new stuff.

I'm A Pecan Nut Too!

Your article about pecans (The Bottom Line) was very interesting. I had the same experience! For many years I have been making pecan pies as Christmas gifts for friends, neighbors and people who have been really nice or helpful to me through the year. It seems that almost everyone likes pecan pies, but not many make them.

Christmas Gifts for Under $10 — Frugal Doesn't Mean Frumpy

flour bag, gift bags, presents

We live in a very generous society. We see evidence of this whenever there is a hurricane, flood or some other type of national disaster. This generosity isn’t limited only to times of crisis; every year it also shows itself in our gift-giving habits. According to an AC Nielsen survey, Americans spend an average of $948 per person for holiday gift giving, second only to the UK where $1,003 per person is spent.

Check your reciept- get the real deal

groceries, organization, expensive, budgeting, shopping

Shopping sales, using coupons and stumbling across super-discounted bargains are all great ways to save loads of cash — that is, unless you don’t really get the savings you anticipated. How is that possible? Simple — at the checkout counter you are charged retail price, or more, on your discounted items and never even know it. Is this some sinister ploy?
