Crockpot Cooking Ideas

crockpot cooking

The slow cooker or Crockpot is one of the most versitile time and money saving tools we have in our kitchen arsenal. We use them so much that, over time, we've bought three of them to help on our once-month cooking day and daily needs.

The Big Beef Drop

side of beef

One of the best things we’ve done to save money and time and still eat well was to buy a cow! Actually, we split a cow with another family. It is cheaper for the butcher to not have to weigh each package and maintain inventory and a better deal for the rancher to sell just one cow instead of deal dollars away for a herd. Of course, to do this properly you must have adequate storage space — we have a large upright freezer.

Organization: Do The Kitchen Dance

Kitchen, Dance, organize, plan, efficency

Organizing your kitchen is much like choreographing a dance. All the elements must work in perfect accord to create a seemingly effortless, elegant and efficient performance.

If you have the wrong tools, or they’re in the wrong places, your kitchen dance will be stuttering and herky-jerky— not at all pleasant. It’s taken us years to get the right things in the right places.

Stock Your Pantry and Make a Killing

Stock Your Pantry and Make a Killing - Cereal

In May 2003 an NBC TV reporter, Brahm Resnik, stood in our pantry gazing at the floor-to-ceiling shelves (8 feet tall x 9 feet wide). We could tell he was trying to compose a logical question. Finally he blurted out, “You say you spend $350 per month to feed your family of seven, but how much did it cost to stock these pantry shelves?” We knew he didn’t understand our philosophy of setting aside a specific amount of money each month for groceries and then using that money to not only purchase our groceries but also to stock up on special sales.

Spice It Up

bottles of spices

It is said that variety is the spice of life, so it must follow that spices add variety to life. It’s not a subject often discussed or considered, except when trying a new recipe. You go to the cupboard to discover that you don’t have that one spice needed to finish your dish. You run to the store and stand in front of the spice display and gasp at the prices. Having a full assortment of the spices you most commonly use is a time and money saver.
