Education Travel on a Shoestring

education, travel, fun, vacation
Author: Judith Waite Allee and Melissa L. Morgan

We came across this gem at a used bookstore. Published in 2002, it is a terrific resource for ideas about all kinds of vacations.

There are numerous ideas and suggestions for fun family activities including visiting museums, touring factories, visiting relatives and learning about family history, and observing historical reenactments.

For the outdoor minded, they recommend hiking historic trails, walking through national parks, crawling through caves, and visiting arboretums and botanical gardens. Most of these activities seem common enough, but serve as a reminder that there are other options to theme parks, hotels and spending gobs of money.

Where the authors depart from the normal vacation fare is in their suggestions to spend a vacation volunteering with humanitarian organizations at home, across the nation or abroad.

These two moms have discovered that with a little work and some imagination, travel can make learning come alive. They suggest educational activities you can use whether you travel across town or cross-country and numerous ways to save money on lodging and transportation.

Every chapter contains countless additional resources to aid you in your search for the perfect vacation experience. Whatever your budget or goals, this book will stretch your horizons when it comes to vacation activities.

This is a great resource to help you think of activities that are more “edutainment,” rather than entertainment.

They present so many ideas that it would take a couple lifetimes to accomplish them all. This is a must have volume for anyone who sees life as a giant learning experience.
