“I told you, Leah, these are hard times.” That’s what Leah’s father said as he explained that their farm was about to be auctioned off. The “Dust Bowl Days” of the 1930’s were hard times, but they were also times when friends and neighbors helped each other. Leah’s father had given her a beautiful pony the previous year. She loved her pony and rode it into town each day. The grocer, Mr. B. would always say, “That’s the finest pony in the whole county.” When the day of the auction came, Leah went to Mr. B. and asked him if he would buy her pony. He agreed.
