Gus and Grandpa and the Christmas Cookies

Author: Claudia Mills

This is a great holiday story. Gus and Grandpa love baking Christmas cookies together. They get goofy when they’re together — they yell at the dough when it sticks and they both eat it raw from the bowl (doesn’t everyone do this?). Their relationship is really special. But the best part of the story is the lesson Gus learns about sharing his abundance with those less fortunate. Your kids will love it.

If you lived at the time of Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King
Author: Ellen Levin

Martin Luther King Day is celebrated every January and we thought it would be appropriate to profile a book about his life. This book discusses the history of the civil rights movement in understandable terms. It defines segregation and gives the reader a feel for what life was like for those who lived in the segregated South. Readers will understand the struggle that Dr. King had trying to convince the Southern states that discrimination was wrong and segregation laws needed to be changed. This is a terrific way to teach history to your kids without making it feel like school.

The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving

The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving
Author: Ann McGovern

This rendition of the popular Pilgrims’ journey recounts a very accurate portrayal of life aboard a ship in early America. It introduces the role Squanto played in helping the Pilgrims survive and grow stronger after their first brutal winter. It also talks about things the children did to help the family’s triumph over their circumstances. The illustrations are nicely done and the story is a wonderful way to introduce youngsters to our heritage and the celebration of Thanksgiving.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol
Author: Charles Dickens

We can’t imagine the Christmas season without this timeless classic. Many have seen various versions of the movie but reading the book gives you greater insight into the thoughts and motivation of the characters. If you haven’t read this book or seen the movie (we favor the George C. Scott version) — it’s a must for this holiday season.

The angel cries out, “Hey everybody, unto you a child is born!” It may be “unorthodox” but is it touching as you read or watch the transformation of bullying street urchins into sensitive, tearful little children.
