The Dangerous Book For Boys

The Dangerous Book For Boys
Author: Conn and Hal Iggulden

While the title may cause you to wonder if this book is safe, be at peace, it is “mostly safe,” but it is a book for boys who want to grow up to be men . . . it’s not a book for mom’s. The topics are so numerous that we couldn’t list them all here, but rest assured it is a balanced view of a boy’s life from hunting to the Constitution, and girls to the Ten Commandments. Your boys will learn about artillery and how to build a catapult, they’ll learn about the Civil War and how Navajo Code talkers helped defeat the Japanese in World War II.

The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings series

Author: J.R.R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R.) was a professor at Oxford University from 1925 to 1959. His fantasy series has been devoured by families for years. With the recent debut of the live action versions of three of the four titles in this series, Tolkien has once again taken center-stage in the world of fantasy writers. The way he combines intricate details and description of fictional characters, suspenseful adventures and a completely non-existent language has entranced readers for generations.

Life On The Edge

Life on the Edge
Author: Dr. James Dobson

We lead a young adult/singles group at our church. We recently took the group through a study of this book. It addresses many of the issues critical to older high school and college students and those starting careers. Issues such as: career choices, dating / marriage choices, drugs, pornography and other major life choices.

The most powerful section is what Dr. Dobson calls the hallway of doors. Do you stay on the straight and narrow hallway or do you open the doors to the left or right which may lead to personal crisis or even disaster.

If you lived at the time of Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King
Author: Ellen Levin

Martin Luther King Day is celebrated every January and we thought it would be appropriate to profile a book about his life. This book discusses the history of the civil rights movement in understandable terms. It defines segregation and gives the reader a feel for what life was like for those who lived in the segregated South. Readers will understand the struggle that Dr. King had trying to convince the Southern states that discrimination was wrong and segregation laws needed to be changed. This is a terrific way to teach history to your kids without making it feel like school.
