Be Smart with Plastic

debit versus credit

Question: I’ve been told to only use a credit card because they are safer and you are less financially exposed to loss than a debit card.

What do you say?

Answer:

Debit Card Facts

We’ve used our debit card to make airline reservations, rent cars and we’ve even earned enough bonus points (some banks offer this incentive) with them to buy several round-trip airline tickets.

How to Stay out of Debt!

stock pile cash

QUESTION:

My question is about debt. My husband and I have been married for sixteen
years. We got into debt early in our marriage. We got a loan and paid the
debt off, now we are back into debt and working on paying it off. How should
we keep ourselves from getting back into debt after this is paid off and how
do we keep from adding to the debt we already have?

I know willpower should be the answer, but it is not that easy.

We Need Just a Little More Money!

money struggles, budget, more money

Question: We never have enough money and always have a credit card balance. We’re constantly behind on bills. I’m thinking both my husband and I should get part time jobs on the weekend so we can finally get ahead. What do you think?

Answer: Working more isn’t the answer. Working together is.

If you don’t have a system for managing your income and expenses, and a habit of regularly maintaining and updating your finances as a couple, the extra money you earn will just get spent or be wasted.

Counseling and bad credit

payday loans

Question: Our credit score is in the mid-400s. We are in debt for $5,500 at payday loan stores; we stopped making the payments since we got behind our other bills. We live paycheck-to-paycheck, have no savings and don't have much left over each month. We don’t eat out and movies are once a year. We got our Nissan Xterra in August. We’d like to sell it, but no one would buy it with $18,500 balance.

Question: My dilemma is this: How can I convince my wife that this is possible? She thinks the idea of living on one income is unreasonable. We tried it before and failed miserably, I believe, because we were uneducated and unprepared.

College Textbooks Make our Blood Boil!!!!

Three weeks ago Steve had a conversation with a woman who works at our local high school bookstore. He asked her how often high school math and English books come out with new editions. She pointed to a shelf full of math books and said that they were close to seven years old. Hmm, seven years huh?

What new information do students get in College Algebra, Trig or Statistics that is so earth shattering that the publishers constantly need to update their editions every year or two?
