Feeling the Pressure for Gas Savings

Becky drives a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. She doesn’t do much driving since she her job is near our home, but whenever she fills her tank she always calculates her gas mileage on our Gas Mileage Tracking Card that she keeps in her car.

Recently she noticed that her mileage dropped from 20 mpg to 17. Her tire pressuer should be 44 pounds of pressure (pounds per square inch—psi) and had dropped to 30 psi.

We just saved $88 per month!

It's been about four years since we quoted our auto insurance. In that time, we've added one car — daughter Becky bought a gently used Toyota Tacoma (we now insure three cars on our policy) and we've added one new driver — Joe got his license.

When our current insurance company — Response Insurance — notified us that they were increasing premiums in the state of Arizona about 25 percent, it motivated us to start researching before the increase took effect.

Medical crisis and car payments

Question: I have a chronic illness and don’t know when I’ll be able to return to work. My husband works a weekend job in addition to his weekly job. We have two car payments. One is $500 a month with 18 months left to pay off the car. Would we be better off trading it in to get our payments down to $300? We tried to refinance it, but the company said no. I’m not sure we can afford this payment on one income. We need two cars because our son just started college.

New car or repair old car?

Question: My husband is a Realtor and with the slow housing market, we’ve used up all of our savings. Our 8-year-old, paid-for mini van needed $1,500 worth of repairs two months ago. Now, at the tail end of summer, the air conditioning stopped working.

Question: We have been trapped in the "miles thing" with our credit card. And it just got too easy to whip it out for everything. Pretty soon, more money was going out than was coming in. Now we need a car. Can you help?
