Frugality is a hot topic these days. Our hope is that our message of fiscal fitness can help the hundreds of thousands of families facing reductions in pay and layoffs. Our economy needs hope, but it’s not going to come from the government printing money. It’s going to come from each one of us helping our neighbors. It’s time to stand together . . . or we’ll surely fall apart!

Slice the cost of Cheese

We just read this blog posted by a friend who read our book. She takes our money saving lunch meat strategy (buying chunks of lunch meat in the meat department and having the deli slice it) one step further — it's great! She reduced her cost for sliced cheese almost in half! It's a great idea.

A magazine reporter who just interviewed us sent the following tip yesterday — you've got to move fast:

Which credit card should we pay off first?

Question: Would it be wiser to make extra payments to pay down a credit card that has a 0 percent interest rate with a somewhat large balance (around $6,000) or to make extra payments to pay down a credit card with a smaller balance (around $2,000) and 11 percent interest?  I'm trying to decide which one to pay down on first. The card with 0 percent is for the life of the loan.

Tips for thawing milk

Question: How do you thaw your milk? I froze a gallon of 2 percent milk but it is taking forever to thaw. It’s been in the refrigerator for three days and it's still frozen.

She Gets It

A friend sent us a link to Negar Sedghi's blog - Live, Love Laugh. She wrote a summary of our book that is really insightful - she gets it. Negar sees the "false front" that the "American Dream" presents. Accumulating debt may allow you to buy things you want now, but if debt accumulation continues, life becomes based on a false economy. And eventually (and 2009 is eventually for lots of people) debt turns around and demands to be paid back. That's when the reality of the true cost of debt is revealed.

Bills keep piling up: What to do?

bills, bills, bills, past due notice

Question: With grocery, utilities and public transportation prices climbing, our family is struggling to survive. We have a large family and do grow a small garden, but the bills keep piling up. We’re behind on our rent and income taxes. Our kids attend a charter school that requires uniforms which we can’t afford. We don’t have credit cards or a car and never take vacations. What can we do?

Save Money on College Text Books

College text books are a source of frustration and great expense for many students and parents. We currently have one kid taking college classes and are appalled at what the bookstores are charging for text books.

New car or repair old car?

in
car repair, old car, new car, mechanic

Question: My husband is a Realtor and with the slow housing market, we’ve used up all of our savings. Our 8-year-old, paid-for mini van needed $1,500 worth of repairs two months ago. Now, at the tail end of summer, the air conditioning stopped working.
