Chill out and save
Question: We have an extra large freezer and like to stock up on great deals. What foods can be frozen?
Answer: Freezers are one of the best money-saving tools you can buy. They preserve most foods for a long time and allow you to stock up on sale items to reduce your overall cost.
But there are some drawbacks. Frost-free freezers tend to dry out foods quickly because they utilize a fan to constantly circulate air while eliminating frost.
The foods we freeze most often are:
- breads (carefully stored to avoid crushing),
- meats,
- old bananas (saved for banana bread),
- all sorts of berries,
- cheese,
- peaches,
- margarine and butter,
- milk,
- nuts,
- and of course, Snickers bars (frozen is the only way to eat those).
Don’t freeze sliced, but uncooked, potatoes; they turn black — we know from experience.
We cover the topic of food storage in much greater detail in Chapter 6 (Stocking Up and Organizing) of our book, Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America's Cheapest Family.

I find that potatoes do not freeze well—except for when they are mashed (i think that is because the fibers have been broken down?). I once made my famous scalloped potatos w/ham and froze it-big mistake it was terrible! Otherwise I find most other things I've frozen, work well.
