Egg Savings
Grade B eggs are really Grade A in different packaging!
In an article in Member Archive of AmericasCheapestFamily.com we presented several strategies for saving money on the purchase of eggs at the grocery store.
We just recently stumbled across another great money saver. Kroger stores (Fry's in Arizona click here for a list of all of their brands ) nationwide have a policy of taking eggs from broken dozens and repackaging them at the store. They sell these Grade
B eggs at a reduced price (79 to 99 cents per dozen at the stores in our area). That alone is a huge savings with regular prices sometimes as high as $3 per dozen.
But the deal gets even better when you weigh the eggs. Because the grocery store takes eggs from various dozens and combines them into their Grade B cartons, the weight of the eggs varied from carton to carton. Out of the 10 dozen (that's how many we go through in a month) we purchased:
- 5 weighed in as Extra Large Eggs
- 3 weighed in as Large Eggs
- 2 weighed in as Medium Eggs
Some of the eggs were plain white, others were brown and a few were fancy signature brown eggs (the most expensive).
Check with your grocer's dairy manager and ask what the do with eggs from broken cartons. They may have a policy of reducing the price and you'll find great savings. They may not have a policy yet, and you can encourage them to establish one like Kroger's
